Sigma957 wrote on his torrent (http://u2torrents.com/torrents-details.php?id=3984) of this show: "Not the best sounding. This one's for the collectors only. If anyone has or knows of a better quality version, PLEASE share it."
Ask and ye shall receive.
In the '70s and early '80s, one branch of JEMS was based in Detroit which explains how many great master recordings we have from the Motor City. And this, J's second U2 show, is no exception. Whatever befell the circulating copies of the show, the fresh transfer offers a significant upgrade in sound quality. Samples provided including "Rejoice" so you can compare to Sigma957's torrent which also includes a "Rejoice" sample.
For reasons lost to history the show was recorded on an off-brand blank (GST, which stands for "Great Sounding Tape"--yeah, right) and the levels were pretty inconsistent, especially between channels. The azimuth adjust definitely helped get things in line and I corrected as best I could on the rest.
The "dictation" recorder I believe is a Sony TCD-153, but I have an email into J to confirm. I will comment when I get the specifics.
I really enjoyed hearing this one. It is close sounding and the spirits of the band are high, even though it is a short show.
